ABOUT DR. KOENEN
Dr. Koenen was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest and obtained his bachelor's degree from the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. He then studied medicine at the New York University School of Medicine. After obtaining his Doctor of Medicine, he completed a residency in general psychiatry at the University of Washington as well as a fellowship in forensic psychiatry at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is board certified in both general and forensic psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Koenen later studied law at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina as well as at the Fundación Universitaria San Pablo CEU and the Escola Superior d'Administració i Direcció d'Empreses (ESADE) in Madrid and Barcelona, Spain respectively. He was awarded his Juris Doctor from Duke University, was admitted to the California State Bar and practiced law in Southern California.
Dr. Koenen has worked in a variety of practice settings including public and private hospitals, academic institutions, correctional facilities, for the Veterans' Administration, at several long-term care facilities, as well as in private clinics serving diverse patient populations. He has served in the United States Navy Reserve and holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Dr. Koenen is a clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology at the Tulane University School of Medicine. He maintains active medical licenses in Alaska, Washington, Idaho, California, Louisiana and North Carolina.
In addition to his treatment practice, Dr. Koenen has performed independent medical evaluations for individuals, attorneys, state agencies, corporations and insurance companies. He has experience performing fitness for duty evaluations. He has been hired by to perform evaluations of defendants by prosecutors and defense attorneys in numerous criminal trials. He has testified in state criminal trials in both Washington and Louisiana, in United States federal court system, before the Washington State Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals and in several military courts martial. He has also testified in numerous personal injury, disability and insurance compensation cases in support of both plaintiffs and defendants.
Dr. Koenen's practice interests include mood and anxiety disorders, stress-reduction techniques, alternative medicine, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy and mind-body interactions. He is especially interested in media images of psychiatry and has given several lectures on the topic. He has lectured on psychopharmacology, the detection of malingering, stalkers, psychopathology, dangerousness assessment and a variety of other topics to medical students and psychiatry residents at Tulane University and University of Washington Schools of Medicine. He has been an invited speaker at numerous meetings of medical professional societies.
